Postal Service seeks to stop Saturday mail to help stave off $6bn loss

The United States Postal Service asked Congress for permission to stop delivering mail on Saturdays, citing drastic cyclical conditions as well as the continuing secular decline in “snail mail”.

The move, which would be likely to provoke a backlash from the public, would help stave off projected losses in 2009 of more than 6 billion dollars.

I received my second heating oil delivery of the season on January 8th, and I paid $2.049 per gallon. That’s 70 cents less than I paid for heating oil on November 20, 2008.

Mill Mountain Theatre closes, cancels rest of season

Mill Mountain Theatre, once the flagship of Roanoke’s thriving arts and cultural community, is shutting its doors.

The theater, which has large and apparently mounting debts, has cancelled at least the rest of this season. 10 years of debt and declining revenues, most likely attributable to the current economy, made it impossible to continue.
